think kit day one - your year in photos

[click on the title for the full post]

Today's Think Kit blogging prompt: Document your year in photos. Did one photo encapsulate your year? Maybe it takes a gallery. And don't forget to caption, describe, or or document what made an image so important. Let's see those photos!

Uh oh. I panicked when I saw the prompt - how in the world could I whittle it down to just a few photos? Hell, I have seventeen days worth photos of me and the giant popcorn ball at the Indiana State Fair this summer.

I'm a seriously crazy picture taker. I take a ton of photos. I'm never far from either my Canon SLR or my iPhone - I think of the phone as a camera first and telephone second. Confession: I sleep next to both of them. Not in the bed of course, that would just be obsessively crazy. They have a nice little spot within reach on the nightstand.

As I was flipping through the thousands of photos that I've taken in 2013 something quickly became apparent.  I was in them. And not just my feet.

Not only have I lost 20 pounds since Saint Patrick's Day, I've grown more comfortable with my looks. I have the Spitznogle nose and the Gremelspacher chin and I'm finally okay with that.

And losing weight has been the biggest news of 2013 for me.  Apparently if  you eat less and exercise the pounds melt off! Who knew? Being accountable to Weight Watchers and an activity monitor have helped. The biggest motivation has come from being involved in a message board on the Weight Watchers site. There is a group of us all born in the same year that chat daily. I hate to miss checking in each day and I was thrilled to meet some of them in person in October.

The photo I choose for this prompt was taken in Boulder this summer. I was with part of my family and visiting with college friends. I like how healthy and relaxed I look - it made me smile when I saw it.

I can't resist leaving you with a giant popcorn ball picture from the State Fair this year....

bloggy mcbloggerson

I am participating in Small Box 's blogging challenge. They have created a Think Kit to encourage blogging, sending daily prompts.

I am excited about the challenge to blog each day - with someone holding my feet slightly to the fire and to thinking outside my usual topics. How many photos of my shoes do you need to see, really?

If you would like to follow the group project or read the blogs of other folks that are participating check it out here:  http://www.thinkkit.org/thinkkit/2013/participants

And it's not too late to join in!

Happy Blogging!

feet frequency fail

It tried, I really tried.

I had a grand and ambitious plan for 2011. I blame this guy - Doug W. ran every single day in 2011. And if that's not crazy enough, he blogged about it too. Every single day. Jerk.

I thought I could do the same thing in 2011. Not the running part - don't be ridiculous, the writing. Couldn't be that hard, right?

I had the idea that I would take a photograph of my feet that day and blog about something that happened along the way.

The photo above, of Doug and I was snapped on December 31st, after his last run of the year. I had a head full of good intentions and a belly full of stew and Guinness that afternoon.

I did pretty well the first two weeks. My parameters were that I had to take the photo that day and at least start the blog post.

That part was easy. Finishing the posts in a timely manner was not. Some days were just to frantic and busy. Or boring. Or sad. Or in some cases all four. I was missing out on some good stuff for lack of time and throwing up some junk just to check it off. I can't tell you the number of times in the last twelve weeks that I've fallen asleep with the open computer on my lap and jerked awake with the idea that I was failing.

I'm throwing in the towel on the blogging every day scheme. I just can't do it, and the myriad of other things in my life. There are several blog posts that were waiting for me to fill in the days between. I'll post them now, gap days be damned.

Starting now, I'll blog when I can, most likely with a foot photo.

Thanks for swinging by....

xoxox,
N.

where did the year go?

My cowboy boot socks. Thanks Santa!

I've been feeling bad about this blog for quite some time.

I don't know if this is a first-born trait or an astrological thing or borderline laziness, but if I can't do something perfectly, I don't do it at all. My house is either really messy or pretty clean. My desk is either spotless or loaded with towering piles. My column is either written or not - no outlines or jotted down ideas.

If I can't write a great blog post with the perfect photograph, it never gets written - or finished. I have dozens of drafts floating around here.

I have really embraced facebook - I joke that if I could have invented a way for me to communicate, it would have been facebook. The short updates seem to be suited to my writing style and humor. The fact that I have over 2200 'friends' keeps me on my toes and the conversation rolling. Click here if you'd like to be facebook friends.

I was kicking myself a minute ago when I logged on to Chez Pez for the first time in months - only 47 posts this year - including this one. 2009 wasn't much better - only 63. In 2008, I wrote 171 times and in 2007, 204.

A couple of things happened - I'm much busier at work and I'm have more writing outlets. The last two years were pretty rough on me work-wise, which manifested itself in to a walloping case of 'poor-me'

But things have changed - I'm still busy at work and part-time jobs and volunteer activities. I'm still poor as a church mouse (I love the new car, but the car payment is stretching me thin!).

The good news? My attitude has shifted.

My life seems more sensible.

I'm ready to stretch again. Write again.

See you in 2011.

on a roll - sort of

I was on a roll with posting. Then I did lots of interesting things that I should have blogged about then didn't.

I'm going to try to attend and write about all seventeen days of the Indiana State Fair.

Wheeeee!

i'm back

I’ve been struggling with this blog. I slowed down on writing for a variety of reasons.

At some point I started writing with the thought that both my mom and my boss might be reading it. Not that I’m writing about anything untoward or that can’t be read by anyone, but it was a different mindset.

I lost my voice. When I read back though the blog the best things I wrote were about being single and my day-to-day life and the delight I see in quirky things. The writing got stifled when I tried to make it too formal – sanitized.

So. Here I am. Again.

I’m 49 now. How in the Hell did that happen? Seriously – how did that happen?

My birthday as always seems like the time to make resolutions, changes. I decided to take a hard look at my lifestyle and myself.

Buying a new car was first on the list. I know the HHR is not the car of a typical mid-life crisis, but it is for chick trying to live within her means. Everyone else seems to morn the loss of the truck more than I do. To a good chunk of my friends and acquaintances my identity is tied to the truck.

I’m working on paying off debts -- yes, buying a new car seems counter-intuitive to that. It’s amazing how much you can save if you put your mind to it.

I’ve made great strides in organizing my house. Last year was all about necessary repairs – new garage roof, water-heater and plumbing. This year I hope it get the house painted and new gravel for the driveway. Again, not the sexiest of projects, but things that would make my house my own.

I’m also working on some intangibles.

Being a more thoughtful and generous friend, for one. In the old days I was on top of birthday cards and thank you notes. I used to leave jars of flowers and sidewalk chalk notes outside of friends doors. At some point I got too busy or too lazy for that.

Although I have a very active social life, I tend to do things by myself. I’m working on making plans with people. Planning to meet people at the pool vs. hoping to run into them. Carpooling to a show instead of going by myself. Dinner with friends instead of a bag of popcorn by myself.

I can't wait to see what happens!

cheating

I have to admit that I feel like I've been cheating on this blog with Facebook. Facebook makes it so easy to post photos and give quick updates. If I could have invented a way for me to communicate it would be Facebook.

And I get to keep up with Rachel, Lacy, Jamie Dawn, Gette, Kim, Jerry, Cara, Teresa, Elizabeth, Crabbydad, Kirsten, Kent, John, Terah, Jenny and Annie there.

For a while I was cheating on Facebook with Twitter - Monica is over there too, but I couldn't keep up with that very well.

Here is my Facebook page: NORA -- if you're in the neighborhood.

hello....anyone still out there?

Um, hi. Is there anyone out there? Can you hear me? I don't blame you if you're gone.
I've been busy doing boring life stuff - keeping all of the balls in the air and trying to be a good employee, daughter, writer and hostess. And keep the house picked up and the basement clean and the grass mowed and the truck from falling apart and the weight off.

I got to write about one of my favorite things this summer - the Indiana State Fair. Read my Top 10 picks by clicking here.

I also went to the State Fair each day. It almost killed me! You can follow that here.

I'm committing to checking in here more often.

facebook

As I was telling Gette in a Facebook instant message chat last night, I feel like I'm cheating on this blog some times with my love of Facebook. If I get a whiff that any of you bloggers are also on Facebook, I'll track you down...um, hi Lacy.

Facebook allows for the speedy upload of photographs and you can do a one sentence status update. Today mine says: Nora thinks you should all stay home today. She and her hat have it under control.

This fabulous photo appeared on my Facebook page the other day. A friend photoshopped Aretha Franklin's Inauguration hat on to my head. I love this photo of me. It's from the day that I got my MacBook. I was following the the instructions for setting it up when it asked for a picture and the camera was activated. The look on my face is pure amazement and joy. Of course, not six hours later I'd already scarred the poor thing.

Today is a snow day. There is almost a foot of snow on the ground. The public school is closed and we closed Second Helpings, but I came in anyway. I wanted to make sure all of the agencies that were open could get food. And the students came in to prepare for their big buffet tomorrow. I got so much done! It's amazing what you can accomplish with out any interruptions.

We had a nice cozy lunch and now I'm heading home to shovel out my driveway (and work off those chicken enchaladas the students made).

Get your own Aretha hat by clicking here.

post script:

The best $40 + tip I ever spent. Not only did I get my long driveway shoveled but I feel a little more comfortable with the neighborhood kids. I'll admit to to feeling a little trepidation when two guys approached me as a I was shoveling, but we soon negotiated a price and the three of us knocked it out in half an hour. It takes me at least two hours and I probably wouldn't have gone all the way back.

The bad news: I still can't get in the driveway. The street has not been plowed yet and every time I try to make the turn in to the drive I get hung up. Luckily I can park the truck in the lot of a neighboring business (an annual batch of toffee goes a long way).

catchin' up

I'm sorry about the plethora of back-dated posts --December 31 to now were posted in the last three days.

They'd been rolling around in my head for a month and I wanted to catch up while I had time. I'd left this blog in the back burner for so long that I was afraid I'd never get back to it. Blogging is one of my favorite things, but I took some time off to get my life in order - organize the house, clean out storage space, write about music, take naps and read books.

I hope not to get so far behind in writing -- and reading your blogs, but no promises!

Thank goodness for Desiree.

Blogstock '08

Blogstock Eve (Wednesday July 2)

I stepped out my door to find a big jug of baseball bubble gum and red, white and blue star necklaces. Thanks Maureen, and stop “blurking” and start blogging my friend.

I was still car-less so Marcella was kind enough to run me to the candy wholesaler to pick up candy to toss from the float. We walked out with big box of candy: Twizzlers, BB Bats, Smarties, Tootsie Rolls and candy necklaces. Yummm.

As with almost every trip I’ve taken in the last twenty-five years I sabotaged myself by staying up way too late the night before. I walked down to the Red Key with my neighbors and ran in to Aaron Stroup, who is in town on tour with Susan Cowsill (see this post ).

I did have fun, but really should have started packing before 2:30 in the morning. I solved that dilemma by throwing every dress I owned and four pairs of shoes in my suitcase.

Blogstock Day One (Thursday, July 3)

Jerry gave me a 7:00 am wake-up call. In my running around like a nut I managed to trip over a pair of boots on my basement steps and slid down a dozen wooden steps on my bum. At least the concrete floor stopped the fall, and quite frankly if I needed to be bouncing down the steps on any part of my body, my bohunkus is the most resilient part.

Since my truck was still in the shop, poor Jerry had to drive over an hour to fetch me and then turn around to head back the way he came from. We stopped for coffee not too far from his house and ran in to folks that live just a few blocks from me. Even more amazing? They were headed to Nebraska also – just a county over from Cliff's.

The trip to Tekamah was smooth. Jerry and I travel well together. We swaped napping and driving.

We timed our arrival perfectly -- we pulled up to the float staging area just as the work was finished.
All of the bloggers were to bring a poster for the float that describes their blog. Last-minute-Nora made a very crooked sloppy poster describing ‘chez pez’ – pretty indicative of my life/blog, really. Jerry had a wonderful poster of Oreo, the pig in his front yard and the mascot of his blog. There was discussion on whether Jerry needed to write "Indiana" on his poster. I commented that a giant photograph of a pig screamed Indiana, but he added it just to be safe.

I met Rachel, Desiree, Ralph and Char, Jim and Mrs. Jim and Terry Anderson for the first time. It was great to see Cliff and Marilyn and their extended family again. We headed to dinner and Karaoke. There where some great singers in our midst. When asked to sing, I shared this story: When I was in 7th grade I tried out for the choir. Of all of the kids that auditioned, only two of us didn't make it and the other one was in special education. Therefore I’m doubly impressed by people that have enough nerve to get up and sing.

Blogstock Day One (Friday, July 4)

We were up bright and early for the Tekamah Independence Day parade. We fought the crowd--seriously there was a crowd lined up along Main Street an hour before the parade started. I was thrilled to meet Jamie Dawn and most of her family, Lazy Blogger and Sherry and Janell. Again, everyone was ‘as advertised,’ no surprises!

Tekamah pulls out all of the stops for the day. I think half of the town was in the parade and the other half was sitting along the route. The weather was perfect – ‘Chamber of Commerce weather’ as Cliff called it.

The parade was a blast! We decided to collect food and money for the local pantry (read the article here) and I was afraid that no one would bring anything. When a woman ran toward with a bag of food I was relieved. We had fun clapping and cheering for the people that donated. I was the one skipping along behind the float and grinning from ear-to-ear.

After the parade we all headed to the lovely Silver Hills winery, taking the scenic route. All cornfields do not look alike. I had my annual glass of wine and a lovely lunch. The owners were gracious, they've created a amazing place.

Jerry and I went visiting...how Boone County are we? We stopped in at Fran (Cliff brother) and Robbie's. Their son, Marty is Jerry's 'blog father.' More new terms. Jerry is my blog father, the one who inspired me to start blogging. Fran and Robbie have a wonderful home and I look forward to seeing them again.

Next activity: nap. And lovely and necessary nap it was. You need to be at the top of your game to hang with Cliff and Ralph.

We headed out to the farm for dinner. The road to the Morrows was lined with signs - I made Jerry stop at every single one. After a mile or so, we got in the groove and Jerry just had to slow down and I would stick my head out and snap.

We were greeted with a Blogstock '08 sign and a festive tent. We ate and chatted and ate and chatted. And ate some more. I loved talking to all of of the other bloggers and meeting families and neighbors of the Morrows. You can tell that the community thinks as much of Cliff as the rest of us do. Team Blogstock kept us well entertained. Juli Morrow treated lots of the group to horseback rides - I felt like I've known Jamie Dawn for a long time, but helping boost her onto Eddie sealed the relationship.

Ralph and Cliff presented the the goodie bags - chock full of goodness. The highlight was the Blogstock books. Ralph spent a lot of time putting them together. I won't recount the hell that I put him through with my entry, but I was darn happy that Ralph didn't punch me in the nose when we met. I missed most of the speechifying that accompanied the presentation of the books. Dad called, I was trying to tell him that I'd call him later. I don't think he heard me, because he said "okay, I'll put your mother on the phone." I made a lap around the bin talking on the phone before I got back to the party.

We were all like high school kids with a yearbook. We first flipped through them to see how our hair looked and then started reading each other's posts.

Keith (Mr. Jamie Dawn) gave me a hot off the press copy of Taylor's music.

Blogstock Day Two (July 5)

...also known worldwide as Jerry's birthday.

We did a little shopping in Tekamah. I'd mentioned to Janell the day before that I forgot to bring my makeup. She joked that you needed a permit to wear makeup in Nebraska and I was starting to believe her. After dragging Jerry though three stores all I'd scored was a tube of mascara and a bag of Twizzlers for Ralph and me.

Wow breakfast. Cliff style. Pancakes, sausage and fruit cups. And Twizzlers and conversation. The rain didn't slow anyone down and it was soon done.

I decided that I really felt at home and traded places with Jacob for nap time.

More fun in the afternoon. We all signed each others Blogbooks, I rode Eddie (a horse of course) and laughed and just had a good old fashioned wonderful time enjoying conversations and watching friendships form.

The evening brought even more food - Ralph was not exaggerating (for once) about how good Cliff's barbeque was. I think everything was enhanced by the convenience of the summer kitchen.

Rachel made a cake for Jerry's birthday, I'm not sure there were enough candles.

Jerry and I might have stayed just a little too late, I think that when the hosts start putting on their pajamas it's a hint to leave. I'm glad we stayed or I would have missed out on the stories the Morrow and Campbell families told on each other.

Blogstock Day Three (July 6)

Jerry dropped me at the farm and drove Rachel to the airport. I got to soak in even more Morrow/Campbell goodness. Dan and Julie's daughters are adorable. Madi was a little disappointed that my name was not Dora - as in Dora the Explorer.

The tent came down - the party was over. A good time was had by all.

blogstock '08

I'm getting very excited about Blogstock next week. Jerry and I are driving to Nebraska. Cliff's farm is our gathering space.

I was waffling on my plans until just a few weeks ago. I'm a big fan of the Fourth of July in Indiana. I was feeling especially sad about missing it after Mr. Herr died. I talked it over with best friend Ann and we decided that I could be gone this year, but Blogstock would just have to come to Indiana next year.

I decided not to second guess my decision. Where ever I was, was where I needed to be.

The real kick in the pants excitement I needed came yesterday after I read this article. Thanks Cliff!

I can't wait!

wedding

I've meet a lot of cool people through blogging, some of them right in my town.

A friend passed along the post about my FFA jacket along to his friends, Kim and Bill. Bill works is the marketing director for the FFA National office, headquartered here in Indianapolis.

They introduced themselves at a house concert and said they'd read my blog. Which meant that I got all stammer-y and blush-y, while trying to remember exactly what I'd written. Kim and Bill are lovely and huge music fans and we immediatly hit it off.

I ran in to them at Soul Bus show a few weeks later and was totally surprised and thrilled to find an invitation to their wedding in my mailbox the next week.

Nora, Jeff Chapin and bride Kim

The wedding was wonderful. They had a great mix of friends, old and new and family. The ceremony and reception were held in Zionsville. We lived there until I was six years old and I have very fond memories of walking around the Village.

Soul Bus was the core band, but lots of other musicians joined them on stage, including the groom.

Bill

I was thrilled to be included. And it was all thanks to Chez Pez!

[and thanks to David for the introduction and the photographs]

broad ripple gazette, vol 5. no 8

I meant to publish on Queen Bee Music site. It is my latest column from the Broad Ripple Gazette. I really need to get back to blogging. I realized that I wrote stuff in the column that is pretty personal - I need the Chez Pez outlet.

I am alive and fairly well. I'm working a ton, but neither my computer or home Internet access is. I haven't been home enough to schedule an appointment with the DSL folks and I'm having a hard time wrapping my head (and wallet) around a $1500 computer.

Buzzing Around Town with Nora first published in the Broad Ripple Gazette

I didn’t see any music in the last two weeks. I worked extra shifts at the Red Key and my beloved Apple iBook is on the fritz and it has thrown my little world on tilt. So much so that I forgot to go see Kriss Luckett and Greg Ziesemer play. It is very bad form to reserve space at a house concert and not attend. Sorry Greg and Kriss, I owe you one.

Russel Settle’s Red Key Anniversary Party
April 2, 2008

Since I don’t have any music to talk about, wanna hear about my bartending shift? Russell has owned the Red Key for 57 years -- since 1951. How amazing is that? Anniversary day always turns in to a reunion. The mirrors were lined with photographs from previous anniversaries. I swear Russel looks as same as he did on the 32nd anniversary, I think he might have been wearing the same vest. I’ve said it before, and I’ll keep saying it- it is my honor to work at the Red Key.

Previews:
Second Friday, Second Helpings
Friday, April 11, 9 pm, 21+
The Upper Room (above the Broad Ripple Steak House)
929 E. Westfield Blvd

The second edition of Second Friday, Second Helpings will feature Chad Mills, Matt Martin and a yet to be confirmed guest. The three musicians will be playing in the round, trading songs. This will be the first time I’ve heard Matt and I’m looking forward to it.

We all know how I feel about Chad Mills. He’s an amazing songwriter and singer. I often have his songs stuck in my head (in a good way). His shows are always high-energy and fun.

The show benefits Second Helpings, so bring cash and/or rice and pasta. Last month we collected 50 pounds of rice and pasta and almost $50. Every little bit helps. Second Helpings has two refrigerated box trucks and six vans on the road picking up thousands of pounds of rescued food and delivering 2900 hot meals to fifty other social service agencies every day. I don’t need to tell you how the high gas prices affect the agency. Second Helpings is on track to spend over $25,000 in gas this year.

Open Mic Night at The Whammy Bar
Music Mill, 8 pm, 21+
3720 E. 82nd Street

The Whammy Bar has to be the best name for a bar inside of a music venue, ever. I actually clapped when I read the name. Well done! A whammy bar (or tremolo arm) is the lever-like attachment that you see near the tailpiece of some electric guitars. They allow the guitar player to vary the tension on the strings and temporally change the pitch to create a vibrato effect. My favorite style is the Bigsby, favored by Chet Atkins and surf rock players. Clearly at one point in my life I spend way too much time learning this stuff trying to impress a certain guitar player. Anyway, on to the preview….

Chad Mills will be hosting an open mic night at the bar starting Tuesday, April 15. From the calendar listing it looks like it will be held every Tuesday night.

Gary Wasson and Cara Jean Wahlers as so new as a duo that they have not settled on a name yet. Hayes Carll
Sam’s Saloon, 9 pm, $10, 21+
1640 East Prospect Street (Fountain Square)

I have a bordering-on-stalkerish crush on the music of Hayes Carll. I saw him open for Robert Earl Keen last year and was blown away. I purchased his Little Rock CD and listen to it at least once a day (I guess in addition to my stalking tendencies I’m a little obsessive). I was so excited when I read on My Old Kentucky Blog that Hayes was coming to town that I bugged Scott Shogar, the music editor of NUVO to let me write a preview. I wrote to Hayes publicist who mailed me the not-yet-released album Trouble In Mind, which I adore just as much as I did Little Rock.

I can’t tell you how cool it was to get the CD in a marked “advanced copy.” Of course when it came time to actually form the questions to ask Hayes I had major writers block. I’m so glad that I opted to send him questions instead of a phone interview.

Anyway, the point of this rambling is: Go to the show, you won’t be disappointed. Seriously, pinky swear.

computer update *sniff*

I shouldn't have been so harsh on the computer repair guy. He went above and beyond for me and at half the cost. My frustration was with the time it was taking. To be fair, I'm horribly impatient.

The bottom line is that there is something wrong with the logic board. The computer burned through two new air port (wireless) cards within hours of being installed. In my computer the wireless and Bluetooth cards are combined. The computer is recognizing the Bluetooth (which I don't use) but not the air port. The repair would cost more than my beloved iBook is worth.

I can still plug in to a data line (which is how I'll transmit this post at the newsstand). The problems are that I cannot connect at home. I have the house set up for wireless for both sides and include it as part of benefits to my tenant (how modern am I?). Right now the router is on the other side of the house. I can move it my my side (that is already in the works) and plug in. But I do an awful lot of writing sitting on my sofa, laying in bed and in the backyard. It is helpful to have Internet access when I'm writing for fact checking names, dates, Web addresses and goofing around on other blogs.

So, unless I get an awfully long cord, I'm out of luck.

These weeks with out a computer have made me realize how much work I do at home. Not only the music writing but for Second Helpings and my volunteer commitments. You would think that with no computer at home that my house would be sparking and that I was exercising and writing letters. Nope. The house is a minefield of piles of books, newspapers, shoes, CDs and Twizzler wrappers. I'm wildly behind on a feature story that I'm writing for NUVO and I haven't been to Blog Church in a month.

I'm computer shopping. I'm sure I'll get another Apple laptop. I'll made enough money at NUVO this year to justify buying a one. I just need to wrap my head around it emotionally. The iBook was a good computer for me and got me on the road to writing. I guess it is like a new car or a first love, I'll always remember it fondly.

still here...

...and hanging on by a thread.

I do have my computer back, but still waiting on the part to fix the wireless connection. I'm a big cheerleader of mom and pop stores and make an effort to put my money where my mouth is. A drawback to independently owned shops is that is the owner gets sick nothing gets done. I did take time this last weekend to edit Ireland photographs and start writing about the trip. Hopefully I'll be able to transfer all of that to the blog soon.

Work has been frustrating. That is all I'm going to say.

I hope to be able to sit on my sofa and catch up on my blog reading circut soon. I knew that I was out of the loop when my family was talking about Jerry's latest post at Easter Brunch.

Keep Crabbydad in your thoughts.

Cheers!

knee deep in work

I cheated and posted several days at once. I'd written the Saint Valentine's Day one right after the party, but it got swallowed in to the universe. I have two gmail accounts (one for music stuff and one for personal stuff) and if you are not signed in to the right one your post won't get saved. I learned that the hard way. Twice.

And, will someone please remind me to take the day after the party off? I also worked at the Red Key and Marigold last weekend. And watched a neighbors dog. Oh, and turned in two pieces for NUVO on Monday. I also cleaned up from the party and washed dozens of glasses and cake plates. All fun stuff, but it kicked my ass.

I had a dentist appointment yesterday. Like most of us, I'm not fond of going to the dentist. I do have a healthy respect for proper dental care and swear that one of the reasons I've always worked part-time jobs is to pay for the visits to the dentist. I have a dentist that I really like and has been good to me.

As I was driving there (a miracle in itself, I used to be so freaked out that I couldn't get there under my own steam) I was looking forward to catching up with Stephanie, "my" hygienist. She really changed my attitude about all things dental a couple of years ago -- in a good way.

As it turns out, she reads this blog (Hi Stephanie!), so it made catching up on our lives pretty easy. I was due for one of those cool panoramic x-rays. As she was fitting me in to the space age contraption she told me that she's going to start taking my phone calls and saying "No more Nora." I giggled all though the x-ray.

So Stephanie, you're in charge- remind me to take the day after Saint Valentine's Day off next year. And you need to start blogging. "Tales from the chair", "Rinse and spit," "If this drill could talk" or something.

meme

Bobbie, of Almost There tagged me for a meme.

The premise is to share six non-important things/habits/quirks about yourself.

I love the word quirky and the idea of being quirky. Being called quirky is a compliment. It sounds so much nicer than "odd" or "our of touch with reality" or "Ho boy, did you see what Nora is doing?"

That said, there is a fine line between quirky and bat-shit crazy, so I'll try to portray myself in a good light.

1. I have over 400 PEZ dispensers on display in my house.

2. My absolute favorite meal is Kettle Korn and a diet Pepsi. If I happen to be taking a bath and reading People Magazine while consuming it, it's just icing on the cake.

3. I write about music, but never change the CD's in my stereo (if you can call it that) at home. I think the same five albums have been in there for at least a year. I listen to new music at work and in the truck. I tried to weed out some CD's last year, but have a hard time tossing them if I know the musicians or if I've been thanked in the liner notes, so I just put them all back in crates and shoved them under the table.

4. I can't play an instrument, keep time or sing a note. In seventh grade most of us tried out for choir. Only two of us didn't make it. A boy in special education and me. I took that as a sign... a very big sign.

5. I hardly ever wear pants. I have dozens of skirts, mostly black. I keep joking that I'm going to open a black skirt museum.

6. South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut was the first animated movie that I ever saw. I sure wish I would have started with Snow White.

I'm not going to tag anyone, even Cliff has already done this one.
